Rotterdam – A State of Trance – 25 Years (Feb 2026)

City of Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ second-largest city and one of the world’s busiest port hubs, known for its modern architecture and innovative urban design. Much of the city was destroyed during World War II, and it was rebuilt with bold contemporary buildings, giving it a very different look from other historic Dutch cities.

Today Rotterdam is famous for its striking skyline and architectural landmarks such as the cube houses at Kubuswoningen and the arch-shaped Markthal. The city’s massive port—the Port of Rotterdam —is the largest in Europe and a major gateway for global trade.

I was able to meet up with my German friend Christian.

Day 1 – A State of Trance

A State of Trance Festival is one of the world’s largest trance music events, built around the influential radio show A State of Trance created by Armin van Buuren.  First launched as a festival in 2001, it celebrates milestones of the radio show and brings together top trance DJs and fans from around the world.

The event is known for massive stage production, immersive visuals, and multiple stages featuring different styles of trance music—from progressive and uplifting to harder trance sounds.

My friends Jacob, Ryan, Bob, Rick, Tim, & Jay helped me dance the nights away.

Day 2 – A State of Trance

Zuiderzee Works / Maeslantkering Dyke

Maeslantkering is a massive movable storm surge barrier that protects the port city of Rotterdam and surrounding areas from flooding caused by North Sea storms. Completed in 1997, it is one of the largest moving structures in the world and a key part of the Dutch Delta Works.

The barrier consists of two enormous hollow steel gates, each as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall, that normally remain open to allow ships to pass. When a severe storm surge is forecast, the gates automatically swing closed across the waterway to block rising sea levels and protect inland areas.

This is one of the 7 Man Made Wonders of the World!
